What are your unusual interests?

Recommended Posts

Have any eccentric fascinations? Unusual interests? What are they? ^-^

I have a few. I'm not sure if they're unusual on their own, but they're at least oddly specific. One of them is pretty self-explanatory: Strange and/or seemingly pointless websites. ( Here's some examples ) Not only do they leave you wondering "why", but there's just something oddly entertaining about many of them.

Some of my other interests are odd because of their circumstances; they regard topics I'm usually not very interested in, but I'm fascinated by certain facets of them. For example, I'm not really interested in programming, but as soon as a glitch happens I want to know every detail.

algorithms are immensely satisfying as well.  I have something similar going on with genetics. I can't be bothered to try predicting a baby's eye color based off the eyes of the parents, but if he/she is born with a rare genetic condition, I'll almost definitely fall down a rabbit hole for hours researching it.

I love studying bugs. Don't get me wrong some creepy crawlies are just scary and I wouldn't poke it with a 8 ft pole, but others are just so interesting! I think it started off with snails and just escalated from there until I'm stopping my hike to look at some weird moth I saw.

I have a chronic case of wiki jumping. The act of looking one thing up, then 12 hours later I haven't gotten up, or eaten, and have read like 50 wiki pages, have another 20 open to read, am in the process of opening 5 more, and went from the beauty and the beast to how the Netherlands sends Canada tulips as a thank you for helping them in ww2. That's a concrete example I can remember, but its bad. Wikipedia. Fandom wikia. TV Tropes. Doesn't matter, once the info starts Fenrir don't stop till the knowing is fulfilled.

This is such a mood tbh, I have this all the time!  I know it's old and outdated now but my mind always goes back to this meme in those situations:

I absolutely love taxidermy, it's become basically an obsession of mine. I don't participate in the hobby right now, but once I start getting my hand on some roadkill... o h b o y-

I study mental health a lot, but alongside that I also study general human behavior such as how we tend to react to fear, and then I end up going down a rabbit hole and learning about terrible government experiments, and then somehow end up at diseases or disasters that could wipe out humanity or even the earth itself, and after just an hour I now know how to singlehandedly eradicate humanity for some reason! And I enjoy every single second of it.

I'm also really into studying and creating fictional worlds - not just lightly thinking up some fun stuff and calling it a day, but in-depth, thorough creation; making every unique life-form from the biggest breathing creature to the plant-life it walks on to the very microbe that all life formed from, including how the land has formed. I start from pure scratch, detail how the planet began and the microbes arriving, and then calculate what would evolve, how long everything would evolve, and keep track of all the tiny minute details.

I don't tend to do this often, so when I'm not doing that, I'm obsessing over every little detail for fictional planets seen in widespread media - HTTYD, Pandora (JC's Avatar), Vilous, etc.

(Just a warning, this is a little morbid)

I absolutely love reading about homicides (specifically mass murders). I don't support them at all (DUH), but I find it so insanely interesting to read about what happened, why, and how people were harmed/killed. These are tragedies, of course, I just find it oddly fascinating. So shows like Forensic Files and Buzzfeed Unsolved are amazing for me.

Tbh that’s me and like, reading about airplane crashes n stuff. I can’t handle hearing final words or black box recordings but reading about em always fascinates me.

An eccentric habit of mine is studying most anything that interests me with more attention and self-investment than anything that bores me. I could read for hours upon hours into days worth of time on those things that catch my fancy, even if fleeting. Typically this is other disciplines of the sciences or even pseudosciences, all of which I often hoard for future reference and comprehension of other details to come in life. In effect, I begin to pick and choose, parting out, information and often weaving it into other kinds.

I've got a few:

[spoiler=All morbid. Read at your own risk.]

  • Satan & demons
  • Narcissism & narcissistic personality disorder
  • Demonic possession, astral parasites, exorcism
  • Hitler & Nazism (I am against this ideology, but I do find it interesting as to what was going on in Hitler's mind, how he became a genocidal maniac and how come that so many people supported Nazism and were so awfully evil. So sometimes I research the history and psychological / psychoanalytical stuff on this. What some nazis thought about the occult is also interesting.).

Same here, although I'm only a bit interested in it. From time to time I watch Forensic Files on YouTube. It's better than Crime Watch Daily, because it's more objective and you get to know how the criminal got caught, which is always at least a bit interesting. Sometimes I want to know more about what went on in the criminal's mind, so I google their name and see if anything interesting related to their psychology comes up.

I do the same thing with personality quizzes. Like, Sparknotes quizzes are my jam and I do one then I open another and another until I have pages then I do them one tab at a time while opening still more and aaaaaaa

I like psychology crime stuff (like Criminal Minds), but Forensic Files makes me go into a panic mode as it's too graphic for me (gotten panic attacks from watching some episodes before) so I can't watch it and understand it even though I've seen all the seasons. Other crime shows are ok though.

I also read from various fandom wikis, even fandoms I'm not in. So I'll know things about other anime I haven't watched, sometimes most of the majority of the plot. It's actually helped me to avoid Attack on Titan spoilers because I already know what happens-well that and I experienced co-consciousness with one of the mains from there.

I like rats, bugs, insects, snakes, and spiders among several other animals that tend to freak some people out. I just...don't get scared from them anymore?

I extremely like looking at lists. For a while I frequented an account on listchallenges which is a list site and I must've completed several thousands of them. I still have it for reference.

Also the first thing I tend to do after waking up is to go on a virtual dragon pet site (Flight Rising) which I'm totally obsessed with.

Not to mention demon mythology. That stuff's fascinating.

I'm really into the paranormal or anything mysterious. I'll spend hours watching creepy YouTube videos about anything paranormal.

I'm also into learning about lost media. I've never had the energy to help and search for any lost media, but I enjoy hearing about leads and updates as well as things people collectively seem to remember that have no trace of actually existing.

This probably isn't too unusual, especially given that it's kind of having a heyday right now, but true crime. I swear to god, we're not one of those those flower crown serial killer uwu true crime people. I'm just really interested in psychology.

Some of us in here are starting to look more into vulture culture stuff. I specifically am super, super into YouTuber drama and trash TV (Laguna Beach, Jersey Shore, Real Housewives, etc.).

Actually same as well, it's a fascination I have with understanding why things went wrong. My family made fun of me because as a kid I watched Mayday regularly, even stayed up watching it the night before my first plane trip. I do the same with rollercoasters - I've got a fascination for those in general even though I don't ride them - and it's interesting to see how all of the major coaster accidents can often be traced back to people being cheap and cutting corners. But rollercoasters are cool, I like learning how they work and the themes and characters people show in them.

I'm also pretty into researching urban planning and infrastructure, especially focusing on public transit. I live in a section of Canada with a fairly robust provincial transit system but I can still tell you exactly what sabotaged transit in many American major cities.

I like learning about the paranormal and urban legends. I haven't done much of this in a while, but I want to get back into it. I have to write a song with lyrics for music class, so I'm writing a song about mothman inspired by Lemon Demon's album Spirit Phone. I just learned the story behind the song Eighth Wonder. It's surreal and fascinating.

I am interested in magic and the occult. I do a lot of research on astrology

I also love researching different kinds of animals and stuff about zoology/biology. I like to try and identify different species that I find around. Others ask me to identify animals for them, and I do my best. Animals have been a special interest of mine since childhood.

I also make fursuits, lol

I like learning about how living things interact with each other, forming a system. (Ecosystems!) Mostly that influences my choice in games. I like city builders and evolution simulators, also survival games. I'm currently reading a book about various trees and how they are used by different cultures. All variations on the same theme.
